Social Embeddedness Opportunities

This digital newsletter is designed to strengthen ASU's culture of Social Embeddedness by connecting community engaged faculty and staff with insights into the local and national dialogue on community engagement in higher education, as well as other resources and professional development opportunities.

ASU Events

  • ASU Social Embeddedness Conference: Join a network of community-engaged faculty and staff at ASU, exchange best practices and generate institutional dialogue about the challenges and opportunities of forging mutually beneficial relationships with community partners. The event will be held on April 6th from 9am-4pm at ASU West campus. (Registration info is forthcoming!)
  • 32nd Annual ASU Day at the Capitol will be on February 14, 2018 from 11am-1pm on the Senate Lawn, State Capitol. Join us for lunch as we host elected officials and showcase exhibits representing the best of Arizona State University.  
  • 19th Annual Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness: Leading in an Age of Disruption hosted by the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation on March 2, 2018 at the Tucson Convention Center. Nearly 150 nonprofit professionals, board members, philanthropists, funders, community members and business leaders are expected to attend. For more information and to register, click here

National Conferences and Journals

  • 2018 Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement Meeting brings together faculty, student affairs professionals, senior campus administrators, students and community partners to advance civic engagement in higher education. The conference will be held on June 6-9, 2018, in Anaheim, CA. Proposals are due February 5, 2018 and can be submitted here
  • Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE) Call for Manuscripts for their special issue: "Exploring the Work and Influence of Community Engagement Professionals." (JHEOE Vol 23, Issue 1 - March 2019) 

    February 16, 2018:Teleconference with guest editor for inquiring authors (RSVP LDD20@pitt.edu)

    March 1, 2018: Proposals due (no greater than 750 words)
  • Toward Pedagogies of Critical Community-based Learning Symposium is hosted by Portland State on April 5th. Deadline for proposals is Monday, February 5, 2018. Learn more here.

Grants and Awards

  • Apply to be an ASU Institute for Humanities Research Fellow: The ASU Institute for Humanities Research invites ASU scholars to propose research projects related to the theme "Urban and Rural" for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applicants may approach the theme from a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives in the humanities. Cross-disciplinary teams are also encouraged to apply.   • The 2018 Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) Excellence Awards Program, which recognizes exemplary engaged scholarship, is accepting nominations through March 1, 2018. For more info about the award and nomination instructions, visit here

Student Opportunities

  • Civic Engagement Summit at ASU: Join MyGovUSA at ASU, USG, and Changemaker Central on Febuary 3rd for a Civic Engagement Summit at the Student Pavillion. The goal of this event is to critically engage students and other members of our community in meaningful discussion about the intersection between civic engagement and the following topics: sustainability, future of tech, higher ed funding policies, and the future of Tempe.   • Pitchfork Award Changemaker Entrepreneurship Team of the Year is accepting nominations to recognize student-led entrepreneurship efforts until midnight, Thursday, February 8th. Currently, there are only two nominations for this category. Nominate here
  • ASU Peace Corps Week starts Monday, February 12th and ends on Saturday, Feb 17th with Red, White and Serve. Learn more here
