This digital newsletter is designed to strengthen ASU's culture of Social Embeddedness by connecting community engaged faculty and staff with insights into the local and national dialogue on community engagement in higher education, as well as other resources and professional development opportunities.

ASU Events

  • Social Embeddedness Network Monthly Brown Bag Lunch Series: Bring your lunch and join your colleagues in facilitated discussion around topics related to being a socially embedded scholar or community engagement professional at ASU.
    • November Topic: Exploring strategies for more efficient collaboration between academic faculty and Admissions to meet the demand for STEM outreach programming. November 26, 2018 at West campus (Sands 103) from 12-1pm. Register here
    • December Topic: Best practices and campus-wide partnerships for K-12 teacher trainings. December 13, 2018 at Tempe campus (Fulton Center Suite 245) from 12:15-1:15pm. Register here

  • Annual Social Embeddedness Network Conference: Save the Date February 28th from 9-4pm at the Memorial Union, Tempe campus. 

Conferences and Journals

  • Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education Call for Manuscripts for their special edition dedicated to Critical Service-Learning. This special issue intends to highlight research that explores critical service-learning experiences or the relationship between service-learning and social justice. Case studies that emphasize critical service-learning experiences, detail efforts to employ a critical service-learning framework, or offer constructive critiques that may move a community engagement project towards a more critical or social justice-focused practice would also be welcomed. Scholarly pieces reflecting on critical community-engaged practices, challenging higher education and/or the service-learning/community engagement field, and outlining progressive models for community engaged work will also be considered.   • Call for Papers: Engaged Scholar Journal is soliciting submissions for their Spring 2020 special issue: "Engagement in Anthropologies of Health and Wellbeing." More info here. Expressions of interest are due by December 10, 2018. 

  • Call for Papers: Gateways International Journal of Community Research and EngagementSubmissions should explore the epistemologies and forms of scholarship emerging from and through community engagement, which are both challenging and enriching higher education.   • 30th Annual National Service-Learning Conference Call for Proposals: Hosted by the National Youth Leadership Council, this conference highlights and promotes service-learning as a way of teaching and learning that builds academic and citizenship skills while renewing communities and provides professional development for K-H educators, administrators, faculty, researchers, youth leaders, partners, policy makers and corporate and foundation officers. April 15-16, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA.   • Call for Applications: ASU President's Medal for Social Embeddedness recognizes ASU teams that have demonstrated excellence in identifying a community need or issue and fostering mutually supportive partnerships between Arizona communities and ASU to develop and implement successful solutions.
