Science as a Photographical Art
Description
This three week course is for 6th and 7th grade students. Many of us have looked at photos, but have you ever wondered how the photo came about? How about field stops and aperture with a camera? In this course students will learn the answers to these questions. They will also be introduced to the Periodic Table and simple chemical reactions to create Polaroid transfer images. Individuals will have the chance to use their knowledge of science to take exceptional photographs and create beautiful prints in class. Career Exploration and Leadership Development
Asian LEAD Academy
Description
The Asian LEAD Academy was established in 1994 to address the needs expressed to Arizona State University by members of the Asian American community. The primary concern was that Asian American students were not receiving the instruction and support necessary to develop leadership skills. A task force was created to address this issue and to define the criteria that are used to select participants. As a result, the Asian LEAD Academy was designed to provide academic support and leadership skills training through enrichment activities for students of Asian heritage. Leadership skills will be improved and strengthened through the use of public speaking, debate, mock trial, career planning, and other hands-on activities and field trips. Students will also become familiar with Asian American and Pacific Islander cultures, history, and current issues through research and presentations.

Digital Game Intensive
Description
Digital games are pervasive in today's society and rapidly are growing in cultural influence. The impact of new game interfaces, such as the Nintendo® Wii, illustrates that games are moving beyond the console and now engaging players in new types of interaction. During this game-creation intensive, students work in collaborative teams to study and design interactive digital games that use full-body 3D movements and gestures within ASU’s innovative mixed-reality environment, SMALLab. Through hands-on activities, they create audio, visual and movement elements that are assembled, through programming, into new immersive games. At the end of the program, students invite family and friends to SMALLab for an evening of interactive-game play and fun with their new creations. The intensive is led by an interdisciplinary team of digital media experts from ASU's Arts, Media and Engineering Program.

Learning to Program Using Ruby
Description
This three week course is for talented 6th and 7th grade students. We use computers every day, and they are not just sitting on our desk. They are in the game console, the cable box and the TV in our family room, in the microwave and the coffee machine in the kitchen, in the cell phone and iPod. A computer helps run the car's engine, and some people now have a computer navigation system in their car. There are computers at the store where we buy groceries and at the bank where we withdraw money. Computers are even at the fitness center where we exercise. Computers are everywhere, but a computer cannot do anything if someone does not write a program for it. It is easier than ever before to learn how to program a computer. In this course, students will use Ruby, a modern, dynamic, open source programming language with a focus on simplicity and productivity. Students will learn to author their own computer programs using Ruby programming language, understand basics of object oriented programming techniques, develop programs that use multiple modules, and understand and develop algorithms used in programming. No prior programming experience is required for this course; however, students need to be able to type with reasonable speed and good accuracy. The final week of class will culminate in the students creating their own interactive game. Learning to program is a valuable skill for anyone who wants to be computer literate.

Creative Writing for 6th and 7th graders
Description
This three week course is for talented 6th and 7th grade students. This course is an opportunity for students to create compelling and original works of fiction and to increase their technical capacities as writers. We will read short stories by contemporary and established authors. We will try to figure out what we like about these stories. We'll ask questions such as, How did the author create such vivid images? Why did she choose a specific word and how are her sentences structured? Who is telling the story? Can we describe the narrator's voice? What happens during the story? Exactly how does a writer create meaning? We will study published fiction, but then we will write our own stories and ask the same questions of our work. We'll examine what is sublime in our own writing. Our goal is to understand how to create memorable fiction.

This course provides the mathematical base necessary for students to pursue studies in a full-year Algebra 1 course. Through computer-guided tutorial instruction supplemented with instructor-led lectures, students will work at their own pace. The students will study the real number system and its sets, the concepts of algebra, the rules of algebra, the operations of signed numbers, and the solution process for linear equations and linear inequalities. Throughout the course students' skills are continually monitored so that further instruction focuses on new and more complex problems and topics. Students taking this course should be proficient in the pre-algebra skills of working with the four basic operations of whole and rational numbers and basic number theory. Students should also have some familiarity with exponents, square roots, and order of operation. In this course, students must be capable of working independently.

On the Move to Algebraic Thinking
Description
This three week course is for talented 3rd grade students. In this course, students will gain access to the big ideas and concepts basic to algebraic thinking, like variable, constant, expression, and equation, by strategically moving manipulatives to solve linear equations. Using a visual, hands-on system that consists of game pieces and numbered cubes, students will be able to physically represent and find solutions to linear equations. As students learn to create concrete representations of algebraic symbols, they will begin to develop the thinking and skills needed to transition to the more abstract, formal processes of solving algebraic equations. Each day a new lesson will be presented that will build upon the concepts taught the previous day. Students will be assessed to ensure comprehension of concepts, and homework will be assigned to promote retention of the lessons covered in class. Students will also participate in classroom activities that will enhance and highlight the big ideas of solving equations.

SkyQuest: An Astronomer's Adventure
Description
This three week course is for students in grades 4th and 5th. In today's world, we take for granted our knowledge that the Earth circles the Sun, the Sun exists in a galaxy, and our galaxy exists within a universe to big for comprehension. But how did humans come about this grand idea? In this course the students will take their minds back 1000's of years, when humans believed the Earth was the center of everything. Using the STARLAB planetarium, students will see the stars the same way ancient European, Asian, and Native American cultures did, and learn how the stars were useful to their way of life and survival. Then, students will learn about the famous astronomer Galileo and how the telescope led him to the idea that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Students will deduce their own ways of proving this theory using knowledge gained in the classroom and their own observations of the Sun and moon. Finally, we will leave our solar system to explore the vastness of our galaxy and universe, leaving students with a general idea of what big questions scientists are now trying to answer.

They will also learn that there are inherent limitations to motion and paradoxes associated with it. Subsequently, they will investigate some of the properties of matter, and its available energy that we utilize to improve our daily lives. They will investigate phenomena related to electricity and magnetism and how these are interconnected.
